As hectic as my life has been, I have tried to keep some magickal things going. The main one was a purification bath I set up on January 1st. 2016 was a disaster on multiple levels, and I knew I wanted to come out of that making 2017 a much better year. This was my first step toward doing so.
I started by collecting bath supplies to represent each of the four elements. I used bath salts for earth, a bath bomb for air (because it's fizzy and makes air bubbles), and some bath confetti for fire; it was pink and heart-shaped, so it seemed to convey the idea of fire's emotional passion. For water, I used a very special ingredient. Back in 2015 when there was that major Super Blood Moon Eclipse event, I charged a bottle of water in the moon's energy, focusing on capturing its qualities of profound transformation. I had never used any of it, wanting to save it for particularly significant moments, but I don't know that I can think of a time that has needed more transformational power than 2016 going into 2017, so I poured some of my Blood Moon Eclipse Water into the bath as well.
As always, these ingredients are just things that I used. I had all of them on hand, and did not go out of my way to source anything. Feel free to make substitutions as you like - other bath products, herbs, crystals, whatever works for you. If you don't have your own Eclipse Water, substitutions there are also perfectly acceptable. You could use Storm Water, if you have some, or just empower the water that's already in the tub.
Once I had my ingredients together, I ran the bath water, and then added everything, invoking each element as I did so. I used a small lamp for mood lighting rather than the overhead, and then took my bath! I also find that it's helpful to shower after doing something like that, to make sure that all the soap is out of my hair, but in terms of set-up, it's quite simple. My only other note would be to then thank the elements once the bath is concluded.

Yesterday was a wonderful, busy day. After volunteering at Habitat for Humanity in the morning, I got changed and ready to go to SIPA's Samhain ritual. Tara met me outside my dorm around 2:45, and we drove over to Crab Orchard Campground for the event.
The ritual had originally been going to be at Devil's Kitchen Lake like Mabon, but apparently that area is now undergoing construction, so the parks department gave us the Crab Orchard spot instead. Quite honestly, it was probably a better site, anyway - for one thing, the peninsula was huge, and we had the whole thing to ourselves. There was no designated shelter, which, granted, would have been less fun had it been raining like last year, but fortunately, the weather was perfect. The sky was clear, and it was 80 degrees in the afternoon.
I explored the site a bit, and found this strawberry plant growing a baby strawberry! It seemed a little late in the season, but as warm as it was, I suppose the plants didn't mind.
Because the area was so large, we had a lot of options for where we held ritual. Tara originally wanted to use this spot, right on the lake, which had a cool, star-shaped tree stump in the ground. However, it was quite windy, and there was some concern about whether or not things would blow over, so she decided instead to use an area further back in the trees, but which still had a view of the lake.
As always, there was a potluck. I brought soda, since there hadn't been enough drinks at the last ritual, and enjoyed pizza, vegetables, pasta, cupcakes, and cookies. There was also a home-grown watermelon which I had some of later - very tasty - and apple cider.
Look at these cool Samhain cupcakes! They were filled with raspberry sauce, too, mmmm....
I hadn't been expecting to get to use my construction skills at all at the ritual, but as it would turn out, there were some pieces to construct for the Circle setup. Sean designed these elemental doorways, built out of 2x2s and fabric, which we put together using his battery-powered staple gun. This was Air, in the East.
A close-up of the elemental altar beyond the Air doorway; people had the opportunity to banish from their lives anything relating to the element Air by writing it down and then tying the paper to the wreath like a dreamcatcher.
The Fire doorway; problems relating to the element Fire were written down and the papers burned in the cauldron.
The Water doorway; problems relating to the element Water were written down and drowned in the water inside the vase.
The Earth doorway; problems relating to the element Earth were buried in the tray of potting soil.
There was also a central bonfire for burning any problems related to Spirit, or to issues not clearly covered by one of the other elements.
These were the items I brought for the ancestor altar; we've had some deaths in the family this year, so I had quite a bit more to bring than I did last Samhain.
We held the ritual after the sun went down. It was windy enough that it was impossible to keep the candles lit, but I saw a shooting star right after everyone had finished honoring their ancestors, and it was a really good, contemplative ceremony. There were also some reporters from a local newspaper who came to talk and photograph, so I may be in the newspaper sometime this week!

It's been a pretty productive day today. I got quite a bit of cleaning done, first with a load of laundry, and then by pulling out the bottom drawers of my dresser and removing all the accumulated junk. While I was at it, I found my little pewter hummingbird stone which I'd never been able to locate after it fell back there a year or two ago.
I have it sitting as part of a miniature shrine to the element Air on top of my dresser. With it is a yellow candle and matching knit bunny, as well as a replica arrowhead and a watercolor painting of an owl I did. I have similar mini shrines for the other elements as well. This one probably gets the most use, since I stand in front of it to do my hair.

My spell from yesterday manifested, so now I'm happy to share it with you all. I made a lot of it up on the fly, but it worked out even better than I had hoped! This was my first time trying a poppet spell, but I had read a lot about them and felt comfortable with the idea.
This spell was specifically geared towards helping my girlfriend get her hair cut how she wanted it, but could be easily adapted to any spell where the desire is to manifest a physical change in one's appearance. As such, it is not a glamour spell - this one is to change your appearance, not to change other people's perception of it. You can do it for yourself or for others, but the instructions here are written in the style of doing it for another person.
Because poppets are a particularly potent form of magick, I was careful to fully cleanse and consecrate my work space before even casting a circle. If you are experienced in poppet magick, then feel free to work at your own discretion. If you, like me, are new to the concept, cleansing the surrounding area with the elements is a good place to start. Without further ado...

Hummingbird's "Changing Your Look" Poppet Spell
Hummingbird's "Changing Your Look" Poppet Spell
Materials:
- Fabric scrap
- Should represent the person in some way; it could be their skin color, favorite color, a scrap from an old shirt of theirs, or etc.
- Marker
- Gingerbread cookie cutter (optional)
- Needle
- Black thread
- Stuffing material
- Cotton balls work well for this
- Lavender (optional)
- Slip of paper
- Scissors
- Something to represent how the person looks now and how they want to look
- In my case, this was brown yarn for hair.
- A picture of the person
Cast a circle. If you so choose, you can invoke a deity or deities at this time. Fold the fabric scrap in half and draw the poppet shape on it, either by outlining the cookie cutter or by free-handing a basic human figure. Sew about 3/4 of the way along the outline, leaving the last section open. As you do so, you might recite a chant of your choice. I used Starhawk's classic Kore Chant, since it is literally about changes.
Carefully cut out around the poppet shape and turn it right-side out. Stuff it with cotton, and if you wish, add some lavender to ease any frustration or anxiety associated with making the change. Also, write the individual's name on the slip of paper and stick it inside the poppet*. Then, finish sewing the remainder of the poppet closed and tie off the thread.
At this point, you should add whatever decoration you're using to represent the person's current appearance. In my case, I sewed on several lengths of yarn to show my girlfriend's hair at its original length. Then, stating your intent out loud, ritualistically alter the appearance of the poppet to show the desired look. I did this by cutting the yarn into the hairstyle she wanted.
Finish up by tying the poppet to the image of the person and stating out loud that they are now bound together.
Thank any deities or spirits you have called, and release the circle.
To dispose of the poppet after the spell manifests, see this post.

*In this case, the paper is the taglock. Therefore, you're best off using the person's full name. Alternatives include adding a lock of hair, fingernail clippings, or etc. but unless you are doing the spell for yourself, these can be hard to come by. A second, small photo of the person would also suffice.

I went ahead and finished the green one today, and now I have them situated around my room according to their corresponding direction.
Green, of course, is earth and North, yellow is air and East, red is fire and South, and blue is water and West.
If anyone else is interested in making their own elemental bunnies (they also make great herb satchets, cat toys, etc.), the pattern is available for free download here.

Last weekend, my family came down to visit, and we got to visit a couple of places I think you all might be interested in.
For starters: Castle Park! This memorial park is a bit D&D inspired, and is full of all kinds of statues of dragons, and wizards, and other mystical creatures. There's also a giant castle-playground. I'd love to go again in costume sometime, but for now, I'll just post a few pictures.

It'd be a really interesting place for a ritual, I would think, except that it is, ultimately, a Christian memorial for a teen who was killed in a car crash, and I wouldn't want to be disrespectful. In any case, a fun spot for magick workers and casual fantasy fans alike.
We also went to Garden of the Gods Wilderness Area in Shawnee. More than 300 million years ago, erosion exposed these huge sandstone bluffs, which had been left in turn from an ancient shallow sea. Check this place out:
These patterns in the rock are called liesegang bands - iron in the sandstone rusted, and so doesn't erode as quickly as the regular sandstone. This leaves the complex ridges and swirls in the rock visible here.
This formation is called the Devil's Smokestack; it occurred to me that these pillars of rock could act as focuses of energy, much like the natural version of a stone cairn. In a setting like this, there really was no way to get close to it, but even at a distance I was really struck by it.
We also visited this place called Cave-in-Rock, but it had just rained and so the river had flooded the whole area out.
It was a really nice day of hiking in the good weather, and a good way to reconnect to the earth element. I'm so glad it's finally getting warmer!

I thought I'd put out another book review, this time of I text I bought at a bookstore while in Iowa with my folks for Christmas. The title is Handfasting and Wedding Rituals: Inviting Hera's Blessing, by Raven Kaldera and Tannin Schwartzstein (2003).
I'd like to preface my actual review by saying that I really, really liked this book. It was incredibly inclusive and accessible, and altogether a thoughtful, well-composed read.
Never having seen a text solely devoted to Pagan weddings before, I immediately knew that this was going to be a take-home item for me. Regardless of whether or not I ever have a handfasting ritual of my own, the fact remains that I have multiple friends who might, and truthfully, it seems important to understand the wedding ceremonial practices of whatever religion one subscribes to.
The book has a dozen or so subheadings, and the information therein spans everything from party favors and choices of incense to developing Quarter calls which won't freak out any of the non-Pagans in the crowd. In fact, that's one thing among many that the book does very well - developing level one, two, and three suggestions, the authors provide varying levels of Pagan over- and undertones. For example, if one wants a handfasting but also wants to invite one's extremely conservative Christian relatives, Raven and Tannin offer level one rituals wherein the Paganism is there, but it's subtle enough that it shouldn't cause an issue. If one is on the opposite end of the spectrum and wants a hardcore Pagan wedding with as much overt ritual as possible, they provide that, too, in the level three handfastings. Level two rituals are written to be somewhere in the middle - a bit of Pagan Lite, if you will - for people whose family and friends are generally supportive, but would be uncomfortable with an ultra-Pagan ceremony.
Another thing that the book does incredibly well is to develop rituals that any couple can participate in. If one or more partners has a physical disability, but would still like to incorporate the traditional jumping of the broomstick, Raven and Tannin provide accessible alternatives. For all those same-sex Pagan couples out there? Raven and Tannin have an entire chapter devoted to LGBTQ+ handfastings, with specific rituals for transgender, genderfluid, bisexual, and polyamourous couples, in addition to the commonly-acknowledged gay and lesbian relationships. Moreover, for those same-sex couples who want to incorporate the symbolic Great Rite in a way they can identify with, the authors provide solutions. Is your significant other of a different religion? Raven and Tannin take that into account as well, providing examples of how to blend wedding traditions across religious lines for Catholics, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, and so forth.
For all my fellow theatre lovers out there, have you considered including a bit of drama in your handfasting? If reenactment of mythological weddings (Hades and Persephone, Janet and Tam Lin, etc.) sounds like something you might be interested in, this book provides sample scripts, as well as ideas for costumes and props.
No book is ever perfect, but in general my criticisms here are minor ones. On occasion, the language used was probably more appropriate to the year in which it was published then present day. Couples may find that the substitution of a word here or there is the only change really necessary.
Also, it would have been nice to see a handfasting included for we Pagans on the asexual spectrum. So much of the language in our rituals, no matter which book one reads, focuses on fertility, sacred sex, and etcetera. I don't take issue with that - in many cases, the language is beautifully poetic - but it's not the intent of every couple to "get busy" after they're married. That being said, most of the rituals are pretty easily adapted by changing a handful of words, so it's not like it's a huge deal, either.
Anyway, if you have any interest in learning more about handfasting in Pagan traditions, I strongly recommend you check out this book.

Andalusite Fairy Cross
Physical Characteristics: This unique crystal bears the shape of an equal-armed cross when sliced vertically.
In Nature: Usually found near granite deposits, Fairy Crosses made of Andalusite (also called Chiastolite) form when bulges of Andalusite fuse to a central (often square) piece of Mica.
Chemical Composition: Al2SiO5
Mohs Scale Hardness: 6 - 7.5 (middle-high)
Can be Found: United States, Spain, Switzerland
Healing Properties*: These stones reduce stress and help their bearers deal with addictive habits, especially smoking. They reduce fever and have been a historical helpmate for those suffering depression. Crosses of the Andalusite variety heal disorders of the hands and eyes, oxygenate the blood, and promote proper chromosomal development. They may also strengthen the body's ability to learn and remember. The stones prove especially useful to those wishing to heal pets or children, as these are creatures favored by the Fey.
Magickal Properties: In Christian folklore, it is said that the first Fairy Crosses were formed when the Fey wept tears over Jesus' crucifixion. From a Pagan perspective, the same story could be told, only in reference to the sacrificial death of the Horned God. Additionally, an equal-armed cross often denotes the four elements; use this stone to balance elemental energies in your life. Those in possession of a Fairy Cross may work stronger weather and gardening magicks as well. The stone casts a protective aura around its bearer, and is excellent for grounding work. Fairy Crosses are a "cross"roads for the physical and astral realms - use it to strengthen communication with all creatures of spirit: angels, fairies, devas, guides, etc. They dispel illusion and misunderstanding and represent devotion, change, and power.
Chakra Association: First (Root) chakra
Element: All four elements can be accessed with a Fairy Cross.
Energy: Receptive and Projective
Planetary Association: Pluto
*Magickal healing should never take the place of seeing a doctor and following any recommended prescriptions, actions, or other advice. Magick works best in tandem with physical efforts, anyway, so don't skimp on those check-ups!

As of today, I have 8,888 pageviews. You guys make my day! :D
And, since they seem to be at least mildly popular, here's some more exposition on stones that I've bought - oops! Today's topic for discussion isn't a stone, it's a mineral - Copper!
Physical Characteristics: Copper is a metal with the atomic number 29. It is ductile and highly conductive, both of heat and electricity. Though it has an orange coloration to it, Copper corrodes with time and turns a sort of teal (think the Statue of Liberty).
In Nature: This metal is essential to the survival of most organisms on earth, humans included. It is created in giant stars and is found in Earth's crust at a concentration of about 50 ppm (parts per million).
Chemical Composition: Cu
Mohs Scale Hardness: 2.5 (low)
Healing Properties*: As Copper is so important to Earth's biology, it is natural that it should play a significant role in metaphysical healing. Employ it to reduce cramping, smooth the functioning of bodily glands, and help prevent wear and tear on the joints. It is especially known for assisting with arthritis and rheumatic diseases, and is likewise used to improve blood circulation and detoxification, reduce inflammation, and stabilize the metabolism.
Magickal Properties: The first metal to be used extensively by humans, Copper metallurgy developed in Egypt and Sumer around 3900 BCE. The Egyptians also developed Bronze, an alloy of Tin and Copper, ushering in the Bronze Age. Just as it conducts electricity, Copper conducts energy between people, crystals, auras, etc. When working with telepathic communication, Copper can help send and receive messages. Many wands are made of or include Copper, again to aid in the direction of energy. Use Copper to overcome lethargicness, to improve communication, channeling, cleansing, purification, and increasing self-esteem. Copper has long been a metal of the Goddess, dating back to the Astrate of Mesopotamia. Finally, Copper draws good fortune and is easily used in tandem with stones of a similar nature.
Chakra Association: Copper works with all of the chakras, but especially the First (Root) and Fourth (Heart).
Element: Water
Energy: Receptive
Planetary Association: Venus

I took my first college visit yesterday to the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago. I really want to go to school in the city, and I liked what I saw. Besides, being the "Windy City", what better place is there to connect with the element air, and its associations with intellect? Seems like a good place to go to school, don't you think? It seems an interesting challenge to find ways to connect with nature in a major city like that. There is, of course, Lake Michigan and the Chicago River for water, the aforementioned wind for air, for earth there is an abundance of parks, the zoo, conservatories, etc., and for fire, there is a seemingly endless number of city lights - electricity, after all, is part of the fire element.
While walking, I found a most intriguing feather. Perhaps it belongs to one of the fabled parrots of Parrot Park - I've never seen a pigeon with yellow feathers.
I took it as a good omen - yellow, like air, is well-connected with schooling.

I got my books today!
The left book is Scott Cunningham's Earth, Air, Fire, & Water, a book about
elemental magick, and the one on the right is Drawing Down the Moon, by Margot Adler, which is about the history of Paganism in the United States. I'm finishing up the last book in The Lord of the Rings right now; these are on my list-of-things-to-read as soon as I'm done! In the meantime, I'll just have to sit and stare at them...

Okay, Blogger seems to have switched it up a bit, and that threw me off, but I think I've got it figured out now. In any event, today marks the first real "weekend" I've had since September: no rehearsals, no set-build - nothing. I can just stay home and write.
Something kind of funny happened in English class earlier this week. Our student teacher was talking about the idea of archetypes, and how they apply to literature. Then he handed us a list of the more common ones: the Mother, the Chariot, the Fool, the Hermit, the Devil, Death, the Hanged Man, the Lovers, just to name a few. What does this sound suspiciously like? Tarot cards! Indeed, the most common types of archetypes in literature are pulled right from the major arcana! I was so greatly amused by this synchronism that I brought my tarot cards the next day to show him, and he agreed. Never would I have thought that I'd be using my deck in the middle of English class...
On a more serious note, later that week my friend Steph announced to the class that she is atheist, which I was already aware of, but a majority of the class wasn't. Both of us have had some past difficulties where Paganism and atheism are concerned, so we're hoping that our current class is more accepting of her. Positive energy is always appreciated.
Finally, I know I've had posts in the past where I've posted ideas for one of my best friends in a bad situation, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I say again: no matter who you are, or where, or what you've done, you always deserve to be loved, by yourself most of all. And whoever you are reading this, whether I know you or not, know that I love you also, and that no matter how hard things get, it will get better. Life moves in cycles, some happy, some sad, and some downright awful. But the happy times come back around; sadness isn't forever. God and Goddess are around you always, but they are inside you also, giving you strength. Whatever happens, they always love you and want you to be happy and safe. On that note, here's a little ritual I compiled out of some ideas I found on the web:
Place a candle (white or black works best, but use what you have) in each of the cardinal points.
Call the Quarters.
Concentrate on the the healing, and visualize the problem that needs correcting.*
Face the East, light the candle, and say:
"Candle burn
Shine your light
Take what's wrong
And make it right."
Repeat with the South candle and then the West candle, and the the North candle.
Visualize the healing powers generated by these candles flowing into you. Then Chant:
"Dispel the agony,
let these wounds heal.
Banish the suffering,
no suffering to feel."
As you say this, imagine yourself surrounded by a healing, protective light that shines brighter each time you repeat the chant.
Then, write down on a blank piece of paper all the negative thoughts you have. Make it as detailed and as personal as possible.
Place your paper full of negative thoughts in a container which will hold fire safely (don't set you or your house on fire!)**. Set the paper alight, and as it burns say:
Fire burns and takes away
All that causes me pain
Negative thoughts and fears
They will not trouble me again.
Fire burns and turns to smoke
All that once troubled me
These things no longer exist
As I will it, so mote it be!
Bury the ashes in a garden or scatter them in the wind. Your negative thoughts and feelings are no more.
At this point, you could choose to close the circle, or go on to an additional activity to promote peace and happiness. Grab another sheet of paper and write down the intentions, desires, and affirmations that express what you are going to start giving to yourself and cultivating within yourself to brighten your life.
Fold it up and put it in the middle of the candles to be infused with the positive energy.
Say an affirmation of love to yourself. Close your eyes and have a wonderful meditation session (add in some positive music, if you feel so inclined) for as long as you feel necessary. Bring your hands to your chest in prayer position and say, "Thank you" or any other words of gratitude. Keep the positive paper with you at all times, or at least as much as is feasible (in a necklace, perhaps?)
Then thank God and Goddess, release the Quarters, and close the circle.
*Note: this half of the ritual can also be done for another person, if they are in need of it. Just visualize them at this time, and throughout the ritual.
**Some people, myself included, are not allowed to burn things. If this is the case, then tear the paper into tiny pieces, as small as you can make them.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Cast circle and invoke God and GoddessPlace a candle (white or black works best, but use what you have) in each of the cardinal points.
Call the Quarters.
Concentrate on the the healing, and visualize the problem that needs correcting.*
Face the East, light the candle, and say:
"Candle burn
Shine your light
Take what's wrong
And make it right."
Repeat with the South candle and then the West candle, and the the North candle.
Visualize the healing powers generated by these candles flowing into you. Then Chant:
"Dispel the agony,
let these wounds heal.
Banish the suffering,
no suffering to feel."
As you say this, imagine yourself surrounded by a healing, protective light that shines brighter each time you repeat the chant.
Then, write down on a blank piece of paper all the negative thoughts you have. Make it as detailed and as personal as possible.
Place your paper full of negative thoughts in a container which will hold fire safely (don't set you or your house on fire!)**. Set the paper alight, and as it burns say:
Fire burns and takes away
All that causes me pain
Negative thoughts and fears
They will not trouble me again.
Fire burns and turns to smoke
All that once troubled me
These things no longer exist
As I will it, so mote it be!
Bury the ashes in a garden or scatter them in the wind. Your negative thoughts and feelings are no more.
Good morning! It has been simply lovely here the last couple days. The weather is warm, and the wind - the wind is fantastic. It's been blowing, according to weather.com, up to 44 mph. The feeling of standing in it is unmatched. Hair whipping, trench coat soaring. It's like being in a dramatic movie. And the wind picks up all the leaves and spins them in mini cyclones around the school yard. If you haven't gotten outside, you should! The earth is really starting to get itself in gear, and the winds are playing.
Ahh, Valentine's week. All pink, flowery things, with an excess of chocolate and cliché cards. It's something of a family tradition to give gifts on the 14th, and my mom, along with a pink scarf, gave me a wee pot in which to plant Forget-Me-Nots. I divided the pot into quadrants and painted each quad specific to an element, and added the Japanese character for each.
土, the symbol for earth, and 風, the symbol for air (wind).
水,water's character, and 火, fire's character.
And I'm sure anyone who is familiar with my blog knows what comes next: an overview of the magick behind the Forget-Me-Not. Know your plants, ladies and gentlemen. Be aware of what influences you have growing in your home. Perhaps your favorite flower has healing properties, or has a mythology tied to it related to your particular patron and/or tradition. Like many plants, the Forget-Me-Not, of the Boraginaceae family, has the root of its name in legend.
According to German myth, two young lovers were walking along the side of a powerful river, when the young man saw some beautiful blue flowers growing on a small island out in the water. He swam to the islet, in spite of the danger of the rapids, and picked a bouquet of the flowers for his lady. He had nearly returned to shore when his muscles cramped, and he could no longer swim. He threw the flowers to his lover and cried "forget me not", before the water dragged him under. She, indeed, did not forget him, and wore the flowers in her hair until she died.
In magick, the Forget-Me-Not can be used to for memory and love, both reminiscent of the legend from which it got its name. It also has strong ties with the respiratory system, and can be used in magick aiding the lungs.
I've been thinking a lot recently about balancing the elements within my room. A few rough weeks have left me trying to find that magick spark to get my life back on track. Today, I want to share one of the ways that I maintain balance within my room: candles of the appropriate color are placed for each direction of my room.
The only yellow votive candle in the house is on my altar for a quarter candle, so I have a baby blue votive on the east side of my room. This one, representing element Air, is from a baby shower years ago, so it's done up all pretty:
On the south side of my room, I have a jewelry chest, and on it sits this little pink votive, for Fire:
I've got two bookshelves on the west side of my room, so my blue Water votive sits in front of the books:
Right in front of me, I have a green votive for Earth. Since Earth is the one that's most off-balance for me, I have an owl ring and shell next to it for added support. Of course, one might argue that both tend to belong to different elements, and generally I would agree. However, the ring is a gray metal, and seems to associate itself with Earth, at least to me. Further, the shell is pure white, and feels like bone. The three just seem to go together.
And finally, I have a dream catcher and set of wind chimes hanging from my fan in the center of the room for Spirit. I apologize for the bad picture; I couldn't find an angle and lighting combination that looks good.
Do you do anything within your room, home, garden, or even altar to balance the elements? Please share; I'm always looking for ideas!
