I don't believe I ever shared a photo of it, but one of my birthday gifts this year was a piece of Polychrome Jasper from Rebekka's store carved in the shape of a heart. Now that I've had a little free time over my summer vacation, I finally got around to researching its properties.

~~~~~
Polychrome Jasper
(aka Desert Jasper)
Physical Characteristics: Polychrome Jasper is so named for the myriad colors it can contain, the list of which includes red, brown, purple, yellow, grey, and teal. These colors are the product of mineral admixtures, usually iron oxides.
In Nature: Jaspers are micro-crystalline, fine-grained, and opaque stones. They are comprised of massive (i.e. formed in a mass) formations of Chalcedony Quartz.
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Mohs Scale Hardness: 7 (medium-high)
Can be Found: Madagascar
Healing Properties*: Use Polychrome Jasper to boost your energy; it may be helpful for managing chronic fatigue, exhaustion as a result of a mental illness, or similar conditions.
Magickal Properties: Polychrome or Desert Jasper is a figure stone, which is to say that certain specimens may appear to show images of people, animals, landscapes, or symbols, and one's associations with that image can impact the properties of the stone. The properties can also vary based on what colors are present (see below).
Generally, Polychrome Jasper is a stone with fiery energy, associated with action, passion, and liveliness. It can be a powerful tool for transforming one's life trajectory into something more desirable; it can be used similarly for new relationships. Additionally, use Polychrome Jasper for grounding, and for finding peace and self-worth during difficult times.
Color properties:
  • Red/Red-orange: Enthusiasm, physical and spiritual vitality
  • Rose: New love, romance, and/or relationships
  • Purple: Awe, mystery, dream interpretation, renewal
  • Teal: Temperance, restoring calm, relieving stress, overcoming conflict, protection in the face of cruelty
  • Yellow: Happiness, cheerfulness, contentment
Chakra Association: Root (First), Solar Plexus (Third) chakras
Element: Fire
Energy: Projective
Planetary Association: Earth, Mars
Ruby
Ruby
Physical Characteristics: A pink to blood red precious gemstone which derives its color from the presence of Cr+3 ions. Some specimens display a star shape when cut correctly, and these are highly valued. Most natural Rubies are rutilated, and most Rubies on the market have been treated in some way, most often with heat.
In Nature: The stone's Chromium ions absorb yellow-green light, and then re-emit it as red light. This luminescence adds luster to the gem, and led to the invention of the first successful laser in 1960.
Chemical Composition: Al2O3:Cr
Mohs Scale Hardness: 9 (very high)
Can be Found: Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Afghanistan, Australia, Japan, Scotland, Brazil, USA, Greenland, Kenya, etc.
Healing Properties*: Its healing effects are many, but the Ruby is most associated with the cardiovascular system. It may also treat sexual dysfunction, bladder problems, or conditions of the blood. Further associated with bodily warmth, it may improve circulation in the extremities and help to manage anemia.
Magickal Properties: Actually a red variety of the same mineral which comprises Sapphire, Ruby is a stone of many uses. Many sources cite it as an invigorating stone which can be used to recharge when one is feeling drained. Scott Cunningham recommends pairing a crystal with a red candle for this purpose.
It is also well known for its protective properties. Kings and knights would use it to embellish their breastplate, while many fairy tales pass on the knowledge that a Ruby's color will pale in color when its bearer is in danger. Similarly, it can help to ward off negative emotions and to recover a more positive outlook. Touched to the corners of the home or garden, a Ruby will guard the space from harm.
Ruby is likewise a stone of wealth and prosperity. One could be used in a money spell, or placed in a piggy bank or a wallet. It also helps insure that one's income is stable, rather than constantly fluctuating. For those who collect gems, Indian lore suggests that the bearer of a Ruby can use it to draw more precious gems to themselves.
The crystal is further noted for its ability to inspire feelings of joy or bliss. Wearing a stone set in jewelry is a convenient way to experience this effect.
Chakra Association: First (Root) and Fourth (Heart) chakras
Element: Fire
Energy: Projective
Planetary Association: Mars
Ruby Aura Quartz
Physical Characteristics: These crystal points or clusters have an iridescent red sheen on the outside. If they are broken, the original Quartz coloration is visible on the interior.
In Nature: All of the "Aura" crystals are artificially colored and do not exist in nature. In the case of Ruby Aura, Clear Quartz crystals are bonded in a vacuum environment to vapors of gold and platinum atoms, coating them in a metallic sheath. Many of these treatments involve the application of strong heat (hundreds of degrees) and may weaken the integrity of the crystal structure, making them brittle. As such, it is better to err on the side of gentleness when handling these stones.
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Mohs Scale Hardness: 7 (middle-high)
Can be Found: Quartz crystal is one of the most abundant minerals on the planet earth and can be found worldwide. Theoretically, Ruby Aura could be produced in any laboratory, but be aware that such crystals are usually produced only in small batches, and their availability may be limited.
Healing Properties*: Ruby Aura Quartz is primarily used to heal complaints of the lower back, legs, feet, and reproductive systems. It also possesses antibiotic properties, treating fungal infections and parasites.
Magickal Properties: These scarlet stones are linked to human vitality and passion. Employ their assistance to encourage intimacy in one's relationships. They also have protective qualities, particularly in times of upheaval, providing safety and security. A powerful helpmate for healing the Root chakra, Ruby Aura can be used (in tandem with proper psychiatric care) to overcome the deep emotional scars left by violence, abuse, or neglect. The stone will help its bearer flourish in any survival situation, even those which people choose recreationally (e.g. extreme sports, backpacking, rock climbing, etc.).
Chakra Association: First (Root) chakra
Element: Fire
Energy: Projective
Planetary Association: Mars
July 11th, 2014
A couple of months ago, Hazelnut took me to a new metaphysical shop near her house called Gypsy Haven. It's an amazing place, one which I definitely plan to frequent, and also a huge purveyor of crystals. There was too much variety almost to choose from, but I settled on a piece of Black Onyx since I didn't happen to have any yet. Having had some free time today (finally), I felt it prudent to actually get its properties researched and posted.
Onyx
Physical Characteristics: Onyx comes in almost all colors, though black and white are the most well-publicized. The red variety, depending on its composition, is either Sard or Sardonyx.
In Nature: This stone forms from bands of chalcedony in alternating colors and is cryptocrystalline, meaning that its crystal structure is so fine that it is difficult to see, even under a microscope. It forms in vesicles of lava, and consists of fine intergrowths of Quartz and Moganite.
Chemical Composition: SiO2
Mohs Scale Hardness: 7 (middle)
Can be Found: Brazil, Uruguay, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Hawaii, Madagascar
Healing Properties*: Onyx's healing powers are effective but slow. To combat epilepsy, eye and ear problems, unbalanced chakras, and the like, wear Onyx for at least two weeks and up to a couple of months. Cleanse the stone weekly when used in this way. The stone is especially renown for its ability to heal skin ailments. For cases of sunburn, rash, and other topical conditions, use Onyx water (i.e. water that has held an Onyx for a number of hours) to wash the afflicted area throughout the day.
Magickal Properties: According to Greek and Roman legend, Cupid wandered past the sleeping Venus one afternoon, and, feeling mischievous, used his arrowhead to cut the goddess' fingernails. When the clippings fell to the sand, the Fates turned them into the first Onyx so as to let no part of the immortal perish. The name "Onyx" comes from "onux", the Greek word for "fingernail". This legend ties the stone to two powerful deities of love, and yet modern lore states that Onyx will actually reduce sexual desire. Scott Cunningham reconciles this opposition in his Crystal, Gems, & Metal Magic when he points out that as a protective stone, Onyx can be used both ways: to suppress desire when sex could be considered a health risk or to stimulate it by protecting life and the impetus thereof. That aside, Onyx will grant both physical and mental strength and is an aide for releasing attachments to negative people, places, memories, etc. In tandem with Amethyst, the stone is a tool for overcoming alcoholism and encouraging sobriety. Above all, Onyx is famed for its protective qualities, whether that entails keeping negative people out of one's life or warding off danger while driving through a dangerous neighborhood. By virtue of its banishing negativity, the stone is a confidence booster as well as a stress reliever. Use the stone in banishing rituals, or as a tool of divination; in particular, it is an excellent scrying stone. Other magickal uses include psychic contact with the deceased, mediumship, and past-life regression. In Chinese Feng Shui, the color black is associated with wealth and wisdom; left in an office, Onyx will assist its bearer in making wise business choices. Onyx is noted for its tendency to store the energies of its owner. This is a good thing for its bearer, as it creates a close working tie with the stone, but should one receive Onyx as a gift, be sure to thoroughly cleanse the stone of its old energy.
Chakra Association: First (Root) Chakra. Also the Second (Sacral) and Sixth (Third Eye).
Element: Fire
Energy: Projective
Planetary Association: Mars
Garnet
Garnet
 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e5/Orange_Garnet-sample2.jpg
Physical Characteristics: Garnet can be found in a variety of colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, pink, and colorless.
In Nature: Colorless Garnet is the most common, and is used in industry as an abrasive. Blue Garnet is the rarest. Some varieties change color when moving from sunlight to incandescent light.
Chemical Composition: X3Y2(SiO4)3, where X represents a divalent cation (Ca2+, Mg2+, etc.) and Y represents a trivalent cation (Al3+, Fe3+, etc.).
Mohs Scale Hardness: 6.5 - 7.5 (middle - middle-high)
Can be Found: United States, Madagascar, Russia, Tanzania, Kenya, Turkey
Healing Properties*: Garnet has been employed as a talisman against death and injury, while drawing victory, peace, and tranquillity. Garnet staunches blood flow from injuries, and cleansing with Garnet vibrations is beneficial to both the thyroid and spleen.
Magickal Properties: Garnet is a stone of love and passion, boosting sensuality, sexuality, and intimacy. It increases one's personal level of energy, bringing positive thoughts, and builds both self-esteem and career success. The stone warns of impending disaster by paling in color, similar to rubies. Given as a gift, Garnet enhances loyalty and affection. A stolen Garnet will plague its thief with bad luck until it is returned to its proper owner. Placing the stone under one's pillow at night drives off nightmares, and wearing it as jewelry helps the bearer generate popularity among his or her peers. Also, the stone may be used in meditations on past lives, as it enhances truth and clarity. Not only does the Garnet ward off negativity, it actively returns it to its sender. For example, use a Garnet to repeal the negativity from malicious lies or gossip.
Chakra Association: The First, or Root Chakra, although Garnet may also be associated with other chakras according to its color.
Element: Fire
Energy: Projective
Planetary Association: Mars
August 18th, 2012
I just finished cleansing the house! After the events of yesterday, and the passing of one of my dad's good friends, I thought the energy really needed to be cleared, and it already feels way better in here! Energy cleansing is an important part of regulating the health of a household, and should be done after a bad fight, break-up, divorce, death, or other negative occurrence. It can also be done even when nothing bad has occurred, to keep the positive energy fresh and flowing. All you need is some salt, water, and a bell (but you don't even need that if you can clap your hands). Bless and cleanse the first two. Put three pinches of salt into the water and stir, while consecrating the mixture as holy water. Then walk into the room where the most negative energy is clinging (if, for instance, you are cleansing after an argument, go first to the room where the argument took place). Dip your fingers into the holy water and draw a banishing pentagram in the air. Say something along the lines of:
"I cleanse this space of all negativity, in this world and in the astral. Nothing evil or nasty, real or imagined, can ever abide here. So mote it be."
Then sprinkle some of the water three times in a counter-clockwise circle. Ring the bell or clap your hands until the energy in the room has been raised to a normal, positive level. Repeat the procedure in every room of the home. Note: energy should always be cleansed after a new home, apartment, dorm, etc. is purchased. Old negativity from the previous owners can hang around otherwise.
Now that I'm home, and have some time to do so, I can finally finish off my running gemstone presentations with today's final stone (for now), Unakite.
~~~~~~~~~~
Unakite

Physical Characteristics: Unakite appears as a pink stone mottled with an  olive green. It may look almost mossy, and have little pink showing. If there is no pink, however, the stone may not be Unakite, but green Epidote.

In Nature: Unakite is an altered granite composed of pink feldspar and green Epidote, mixed with clear quartz.

Chemical Composition: SiO2 + Ca2(Fe,Al)Al2

Mohs Scale Hardness: 6.5 (middle)

Can be Found: South Africa, the USA, Brazil, and China

Healing Properties*: By releasing emotional trauma, the whole body is impacted, with healthier organs, muscles, and other tissues. Unakite is important to a safe pregnancy, aiding healthy growth of the infant, and, if one is underweight, can help one reach a safe body mass.

Magickal Properties: Unakite provides balance between the mundane and spiritual lives. It helps remove obstacles to personal growth, allowing one to let go of pain and anger. The stone builds self-confidence, strengthens courage, and allows one to really take control of one's life. Additionally, Unakite can be taken into difficult situations, to retain one's personal power. Unakite also has associations with finding lost objects, gardening, and attracting spirit guides.

Chakra Association: Unakite is best synchronised with the Third, or Solar Plexus Chakra, and the Fourth, or Heart Chakra.

Element: Fire, Water

Energy: Projective, Receptive

Planetary Association: Mars, Venus

It's a beautiful day at grandma's house! I'm seated on their porch as I write this, enjoying the smell of fresh-cut grass, and keeping an eye out for the Hummingbirds who visit my grandma's feeder. We went for another walk today along a shadier path next to the creek and saw a very silly squirrel loudly chewing on a nut.
Having caught a bit of a respite, I finally have time to add information on a new stone, Red Jasper.
 ~~~~~~~~~~
 Red Jasper
Physical Characteristics: Red Jasper is, as one might expect, a scarlet red. It is typically striated with brown and/or dark red stripes. Jasper comes in many other colors, and that affects their uses, so the following may not be true of all Jaspers.
In Nature: Jasper is a form of chalcedony, like Bloodstone. It is opaque and colored due to iron oxide in the stone.
Chemical Composition: SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide)
Mohs Scale Hardness: 7 (middle-high)
Can be Found: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, India, Kazakstan, Madagascar, Russia, Uruguay, and the USA.
Healing Properties*: Therapeutically, Red Jasper stimulates sexuality and fertility. It is beneficial in treating the liver, spleen, and pancreas. Drinking Jasper water before every meal promotes weight loss. On the other hand, the stone helps battle anorexia and bulimia, as well other stomach disorders. Jasper water is further beneficial in easing constipation.
Magickal Properties: As a decorative stone, Jasper combats exhaustion. It aligns the chakras, balancing yin and yang energies, and may be used to bring rain. In the past, Jasper warded off snake and spider bite. Although not a great concern today, these ancient associations imply that Jasper can protect against modern dangers, from car crashes to harassment. Jasper promotes mental processes and restrains dangerous whims. Worn by young women, it promotes beauty and grace. This is another lucky stone for actors, and it gives one the courage to speak out. It is a stone of stability and strength. Red Jasper enhances dream recall and dream work, and assists in unjust situations.
Chakra Association: Red Jasper aligns all the chakras, but is especially helpful to the First, or Root Chakra, and the Second, or Sacral Chakra.
Element: Fire
Energy: Projective
Planetary Association: Mars
Saturday
August 11th, 2012
I'm looking at an exciting upcoming week to round off my summer vacation - tomorrow my mom, Ben, and I are all heading to our grandparents' house for a few days (Nick is there already). Then, rather than just coming home, we'll be with my Aunt C and her friend Leah until Friday. I should still be able to update my blog, though. By way of interest, I will be taking my travel altar, but I'm not sure how much of an opportunity my grandparents are going to give me to use it, as I'm not openly Pagan with them and would like to avoid awkward questions. The stone-o'-the-day is Bloodstone, which is rather appropriate, as I've been working with it today and yesterday.
 ~~~~~~~~~~
 Bloodstone
Physical Characteristics: Bloodstone, or Heliotrope,, as it is sometimes called, is a very dark green stone that may have small white or blue splotches. It is most notable, however, for the flakes of metallic red or yellow layered over the green. Sometimes the color is very noticeable, and sometimes it's a very subtle effect, better seen under direct light.

In Nature: Bloodstone is a form of chalcedony. When green chalcedony contains flecks of red jasper or iron oxide, it is know as Bloodstone. When the spots are yellow, it is often given the name "Plasma".

Chemical Composition: SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide)

Mohs Scale Hardness: 6.5 - 7 (middle-high)

Can be Found: India, Brazil, China, Australia, and the USA.

Healing Properties*: The stone helps with cleansing the blood, thus detoxifying the body, and supports all organs that do the same. Bloodstone's most famous use is in halting bleeding, especially small cuts and nose-bleeds. Obviously, the more serious the cut, the more difficult it becomes to heal it quickly. For pregnant mothers, a Bloodstone worn on the arm can prevent miscarriage, while one on the thigh eases childbirth and reduces the risk of hemorrhaging.

Magickal Properties: In addition to its healing potential, Bloodstone gives one protection from negativity. The stone brings adaptability, especially in survival situations, but also in daily life. It is cleansing on all levels, working emotionally to ease sorrow and depression. Bloodstone is also used to bring courage, strength, victory, and wealth, and is an excellent stone to have on hand in business and legal matters. The stone increases the body's energy circulation and removes blockages. Additionally, Bloodstone provides a figurative invisibility when one is looking to blend in with the crowd.

Chakra Association: Bloodstone is tied to the First, or Root Chakra.

Element: Fire

Energy: Projective

Planetary Association: Mars

Sunday

March 11th, 2012

Whew! I've thought I was busy before, but this last week has literally been a whirlwind! I've had play practice, musical practice, and/or choir practice every day, so I haven't been returning home until 8:40 or so, hence my lack of posting. My mom actually had to have surgery on Friday, so that's been adding to the craziness. However, she's recovering well, and ought to be home tomorrow. Nevertheless, positive thoughts are appreciated. :) Today I actually have some quiet time while Ben is at a birthday party. I'm thinking of putting some bread and honey out at the shrine I built with Hazelnut in the garden. It's tiny, but powerful. The weather has been wonderful recently, so I can visit now without freezing my toes. I really feel it has helped in getting in touch with the local fairies and devas (nature spirits, for those unfamiliar). Things have been gong a little nuts here of late, and I'd like to figure out where the imbalance is. We've had internet, cell phone, computer, washing machine, and tire issues, and for whatever reason, everything I plant keeps growing and then dying on me. I can't decide if the issues are interconnected, or a whole bunch of energy imbalances that require correcting. Additionally, I looked back on all that feng shui stuff I posted last Spetember, and yet, that doesn't quite seem to add up either. Currently, Saturn and Mars are in retrograde which could be potential contributes, but they don't have a major impact on communication with others, and a majority of the appliances we've had fail have had to do with communication. No, it's time to take this one up with the local flora and fauna.

February 19th, 2012

I learned something quite interesting today. Apparently, Mars went into retrograde on January 24th, and will continue passing through this phase until June 19th. For those of you not particularly familiar with astrology, "retrograde" is when a planet appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. When this happens, that planet exerts a particularly strong force on earth, and tends to create intense situations in areas that the planet rules. Mars dictates male relationships, physical challenges, and risk-taking inclinations, so during a period of retrograde, these may become more pronounced in one way or another, for good or for bad.

Currently, Mars is moving through Virgo, and will therefore increase introspective thought. Since we are also currently in the Tree Month of Ash, this is the ideal time to work on deciphering hidden motivations and inner truths. People with a mutable sign, including (obviously) Virgo, as well as Sagittarius, Pisces and Gemini, will be most affected by this period. This retrograde will also cause worries over weight, nutrition and healthcare. Therefore, people with jobs relating to the former may experience a period of instability.
